Check It Out

Fan Interview - Royal Kingdom Challenge

MaxoidMoonBelly from The Sims 2 team tracked down community member EnblithTheFair and got the scoop on her popular Royal Kingdom Challenges! Her Royal Kingdom Challenge 3.0 - Anniversary Edition can be found on our BBS.

The Sims 2MaxoidMoonBelly: How did you come up with the Royal Kingdom Challenge, what was your motivation?

EnblithTheFair: I created the Royal Kingdom Challenge because I wanted to create a themed neighborhood with some sort of organized structure and goal. I tried several times to create a medieval neighborhood with The Sims 1 but they were never successful since there was no direction to it and I quickly lost interest. After playing the Legacy Challenge for a few months I decided the best way to get my dream neighborhood was to create a set of rules and guidelines in the form of a challenge that other people could enjoy as well. The families in my Royal Kingdom Challenge neighborhood all have a place and purpose rather than being a bunch of random families thrown into one neighborhood. The social structure of a monarchy is what this challenge is based around.

MaxoidMoonBelly: What was the most difficult part in conceiving the rules?

EnblithTheFair:Getting all my ideas down on paper in the form of rules and trying not to leave anything out was difficult. I thought about how I would make the challenge for at least a month before I wrote it down, but with a open ended game like The Sims it's hard to think of what to do for every situation. Since The Sims was designed around modern times it was tricky to make everything fit into a historical period. Interactions like "red hands" make it possible for the Sims to live without electronic entertainment. Since the game was designed around a modern reality, custom content really helps to make the challenge come alive and gives it the perfect themed atmosphere. I made sure to add a list of custom content to my BBS posts to give new players a head start on downloading items for the challenge. When creating the challenge I was careful to avoid making too many restrictions. Some rules I left a bit vague on purpose so each person playing could fit the challenge to their own playing style. Even though I frequently refer to the medieval time period with this challenge, you can really choose any time period for your neighborhood. The most popular time period besides medieval is Victorian.

The Sims 2MaxoidMoonBelly: How did you determine the scoring system associated with the Challenge?

EnblithTheFair: I added in the scoring system to give people more of an incentive to follow the rules. However the scoring system isn't very extensive because the majority of people don't play the challenge for points. I originally had plans to expand the scoring section of the rules but determined there wasn't a great demand for a larger point system.

MaxoidMoonBelly: What has the response been like in your guest book or on the boards? Did you expect it to become so popular?

EnblithTheFair: I was really pleased with the response I received from the challenge. Everyone was so positive and encouraging about it. I especially like hearing what other people are doing with the challenge. I did not expect it to become so popular; I didn't know there were so many other people like me out there that really loved the idea of a challenge like this. The feedback from other community members was really important to let me know what in the rules needed changing.

MaxoidMoonBelly: Since the Game has come out, what kinds of surprises or evolutions of your Challenge have you seen?

EnblithTheFair: The challenge has changed a lot from when I first wrote it. Despite my long list of rules I originally wrote, I still managed to leave things out and other community members have contributed to giving me ideas for more rules. I have released a new version of the rules with each new expansion pack that has come out because they each added a new element to the game that needed to be added to the rules. I was thrilled with Open for Business because it really made the merchant class come alive. While updating for each expansion pack I also went though all the comments I received so I could tweak the existing rules to be more efficient. However, I always made sure that it wasn't necessary to have any particular expansion pack so anyone without one could still enjoy the challenge.

The Sims 2MaxoidMoonBelly: How long have you been playing The Sims?

EnblithTheFair: I have been playing The Sims ever since about a week after the game originally came out, around 7 years ago. The Sims has actually affected my life a lot since then. It got me to become more interested in computers, particularly the artistic capabilities. Since the challenge came out I have been learning various photo editing programs so I could make historical clothing to use in my challenge, 3D programs to make custom meshes for my clothing and have taken a web design class so I could offer my custom content in my own web page. It has turned out to be more than just a hobby for me. Now I am majoring in multimedia arts and sciences at my university and plan to have some sort of career in the web design, 3D animation, or game design fields. I haven't been able to decide what to focus on yet.

MaxoidMoonBelly: What do you like the most about The Sims 2?

EnblithTheFair: I love the creativity that The Sims 2 offers. It allows you to become a storyteller, architect, decorator, clothing designer and the list goes on and on. Since it is such an open ended game it really lets your imagination run wild. There is also a fantastic community that has developed because of the game. It is really fun to communicate with Sim fans from all over the world. Both have helped keep me sane over the past year when I moved across the country to a town where I didn't know anyone.

MaxoidMoonBelly: What are the most challenging aspects to this game?

EnblithTheFair: There is so many things I want to do with the game I have a hard time focusing on just one thing. I got so involved with making new clothing for the game last spring that I had no time leftover to actually play it. Then in the summer I started a blog with stories about my medieval Sims but that kept me away from making clothing although it allowed me to play more. Now that I'm back in school with little free time it's really hard to decide which Sim related activity to do. At least I know that there will always be something new to do with this game.

Hilary Duff to Appear in EA's The Sims 2 Pets

International Superstar and Her Dog Lola Available in Stores October 17

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - October 5, 2006 - Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) is pleased to announce a partnership with multi-platinum, chart-topping recording artist, actress, fashion designer and philanthropist Hilary Duff, to make her inaugural video game debut in the critically acclaimed, best-selling, groundbreaking video and PC game franchise, The Sims™. Through this partnership, Hilary will appear in The Sims 2™ Pets games, joined by her beloved Chihuahua Lola, releasing on October 17 in North America and on October 19 across Europe for the Sony PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, the Nintendo GameCube™ and as a PC expansion pack* to the original PC game, The Sims 2. A Nintendo DS™ version of the game will follow in late October for Europe and November in the U.S. To check out Hilary in The Sims 2 Pets, pick up a copy of the game before December 31st.

"I've logged hundreds of hours playing The Sims games, so I jumped at the chance to be in The Sims 2 Pets," said Sims aficionado Hilary. "I love creating Sims characters and guiding them through life, designing their houses and then blinging them out with cool furniture. Now, in The Sims 2 Pets, EA has combined two things I really enjoy - pets and The Sims!"

"Hilary is the perfect partner for The Sims 2 Pets - not only is she a huge animal lover, but she is also a Sims fan!" exclaimed Rod Humble, executive producer for The Sims Division of Electronic Arts. "Hilary was involved in every step of the process, from creating the Hilary and Lola characters to designing some of the tricks dogs can do in the game."

Special moments come to life through the lifelike animations, artwork and game play of The Sims 2 Pets: A dog gnawing at his chew toy, a cat jumping at a dangled feather, a toddler stroking the chest of a big dog who sits by patiently - even the serenity of a cat curled up at the end of the bed. These moments, captured within the game, create a real bond between players and these virtual creatures.

"Although she's trying not to let it go to her head, Lola is very excited to make her cameo in The Sims 2 Pets next month!" exclaimed Hilary about her two year old Blue Fawn Teacup Chihuahua, Lola. "We can't wait to hang at Central Town Park, play with other pups and shop around for the latest pet accessories! Check out her blog for updates on her videogame fandom at www.hilaryduff.com."

The Sims 2 Pets will build on the celebrated The Sims 2 experience which allows players to create and control characters throughout their life while determining the outcome of their relationships and adventures. The addition of a new furry friend is guaranteed to enrich the daily lives of your Sims! Not only will players have the opportunity to choose from a variety of existing cat and dog breeds and hottest designer mixes, but they'll also be able to personally design their new friend with the Create-a-Pet feature. The ability to customize gives fans the opportunity to create their ideal pet by choosing their body shape, unique markings, even their pet's personalities! As in real life, your Sims' pet will benefit from care and training. A neglected cat with an urge to scratch might claw up your new couch if you aren't careful, and leaving your dog unattended near a freshly planted flower bed probably isn't wise, so expect the unexpected!

Hilary and Lola appear in the following versions of The Sims 2 Pets. (Note, in each version, they appear differently)

  • Sony PlayStation®2 and Nintendo GameCube™
In the console version of the game, Hilary will visit the Town Center with her dog, Lola. A player might run into her as she plays with Lola, browses the shops or socialize with other Sims. If Hilary is busy talking to her Sims pals, Lola will roam the park making friends with other dogs and cats, chasing them around and playing. Hopefully they won't get themselves into trouble by digging holes or knocking over trash cans!
Players can interact with Lola and Hilary as they can with any other pet or Sim. You can invite Hilary to your house, and while she's there teach Lola some new tricks to entertain your party guests.
  • Nintendo DS™ handheld game system
In this handheld version, Hilary will visit the Central Park with her dog, Lola. Other Sims can chat with Hilary and befriend her. If Hilary likes the player, she will start to bring Lola to the Pet Care Center where Sims can teach Lola new tricks, improve her health, and make her happier. Lola is a people pleaser, so after learning a new trick, she won't be shy about showing it off at the Central Park!
  • PC expansion pack **
Hilary and Lola will be downloadable for the PC version of the Sims 2 Pets from October 17 through December 31 only. To download the Hilary Sim, players will visit the official Sims website www.TheSims2.com Once she is downloaded to the game, she will be a fully playable characters in the Sims. This means that players can customize and control Hilary as they do other Sims, from changing her clothes, makeup and hairstyle to building and decorating her home?even defining her dreams and establishing her social life, by throwing parties, making friends, flirting and creating a family. With the Sims 2 Pets PC expansion pack, Hilary can head to the park with Lola for a game of fetch, or even add to her pet family by adopting a cat, dog, bird or hamster that she can train, play with, and love as her own.
  • **The PC expansion pack enhances the original game experience of The Sims™. To enjoy The Sims 2 Pets on PC, players will need to own and install The Sims™ 2 before installing The Sims 2 Pets PC Expansion Pack.

The Sims 2 Pets will be available on October 17, 2006 on the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, the Nintendo GameCube™ and as a PC expansion pack* that builds on the original The Sims 2 PC game experience. Versions for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) Game Boy® Advance and Nintendo DS™ systems will follow in late October and November. A mobile version will be available in Europe in December 2006.

MaxisHunter! (Oct 5, 2006 2:27:56 PM)
Pets can show up on community lots. They'll show up more if you're visiting with a pet, to give your pet an opportunity to socialize. They don't buy things themselves, no.

citygrl926 (Oct 5, 2006 2:28:19 PM)

Zach (Oct 5, 2006 2:29:35 PM)
Are there pet ghosts?

MaxoidGrant (Oct 5, 2006 2:29:35 PM)

What do you mean by 'layers on a pet'?

MaxisLittleL (Oct 5, 2006 2:29:39 PM)
When you create a cat or dog you can customize their fur using "layers". You can layer colors and markings to make the perfect pet.

aeflemin (Oct 5, 2006 2:29:59 PM)
Any new lots?

MaxisLittleL (Oct 5, 2006 2:29:59 PM)

anixiia (Oct 5, 2006 2:33:44 PM)
In Create-A-Sim, can you take two registered breeds and mix them together into another breed, much like you would create a child?

MaxoidGrant (Oct 5, 2006 2:33:44 PM)

Pets will react to the world around them like Sims do.

MaxisLittleL (Oct 5, 2006 3:01:10 PM)

Welcome to The Sims 2 Pets Console & Handheld chat, everyone!

Crystal_Pink (Oct 5, 2006 12:50:33 PM)

Pets will be out on console on October 17th.

MaxoidMel (Oct 5, 2006 12:50:43 PM)
Just a reminder, this is a chat with the *console and handheld* teams. No PC questions in this chat, guys Happy

Fireyvedel (Oct 5, 2006 12:51:21 PM)
hay, how long have you been working on the ts2 pets? ps hope you all at maxis are well

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 12:51:21 PM)
We've been working on it for over a year. We had a ton of fun working on it so we're very happy Happy

PugLove888 (Oct 5, 2006 12:51:34 PM)
How will the console versions of Pets differ from the PC version?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 12:51:34 PM)
The console version is a stand-alone game concentrates almost exclusively on pets and their owners.

simfantastic2 (Oct 5, 2006 12:52:21 PM)
Hello, what a pleasure to chat with you! You people are just wonderful! So here's my question. What made you come up with the idea to bring the pets to console and handheld and not only a new expansion pack for the pc? Thank you very much!

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 12:52:21 PM)
There are so many fun ideas for gameplay in the Pets theme. Each platform gives us a chance to explore different ideas about the central theme of Pets.

simfantastic2 (Oct 5, 2006 12:53:14 PM)
What is your favorite thing about pets for PSP?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 12:53:14 PM)
There is a unique house building system on PSP that is a lot of fun to play with. I really like using it because I can quickly build any house I can think of.

sagelovvve (Oct 5, 2006 12:54:14 PM)
How will the console game compare to the pc version

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 12:54:14 PM)
The console game takes place in a small town that has dedicated itself almost completely to the needs of pets and their owners. Even the downtown area, which is a new concept for a console game this year, is dedicated largely to the needs of the cats and dogs that people bring downtown.

Strange27Player (Oct 5, 2006 12:54:15 PM)
Can you have pet grooming services, like a pet wash

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 12:54:15 PM)
In the DS game, you run a pet care center so you get to clean, groom and dress up all of the dogs and cats in your town.

Chris (Oct 5, 2006 12:55:07 PM)
in the PSP version of The Sims 2: Pets, Will it be just like the sims 2 for psp?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 12:55:07 PM)
The design is very different for Sims 2 Pets. It's an open-ended Sims game where you get to customize any lot you want and build up families of Sims and Pets however you like.

MaxoidMel (Oct 5, 2006 12:55:59 PM)
Just another reminder - this is the console and handheld chat. The PC chat will be held at 2:30 PDT.

GTNS (Oct 5, 2006 12:56:52 PM)
Will "The Sims 2: Pets" for GBA have goals to accomplish like the previous GBA Sim-games?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 12:56:52 PM)
Yes, there are a ton of goals to achieve in the GBA game. You move into a pet-crazy town and you get to build up your reputation as a pet trainer, pet walker, pet doctor, parapsychologist and more. There are so many goals and secrets to unlock in the game. We're very proud of it.

Charon (Oct 5, 2006 12:57:09 PM)
How hard was it to make Pets? I imagine it would have taken a good long time to make all those animations!

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 12:57:09 PM)
It did take a lot of work on all sides: artists, engineers, designers, audio specialists, etc. etc., but it really was a labor of love. I can't tell you how exciting it was for me to sit down and try to figure out the essential nature of, say, a really messy dog then ask artists to try and re-create that messines. Or, for example, work with the artists to try to convey Doofiness in a way that will be immediately obvious.

How will the DS version implement the stylus?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 12:58:24 PM)
We use the stylus for almost all of the controls and interfaces in the DS game. The stylus opens up a ton of cool, creative options for the player. You use it to play with Pets, command your Sim, interact with objects, and modify the layout of your furniture.

Guest (Oct 5, 2006 12:59:51 PM)
is there buymode/build mode in the ds version?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 12:59:51 PM)
Yes, you can buy and arrange furniture, objects and tools for your pet care center. You can even change the layout of the town park! Eventually, you earn enough money to buy bigger and cooler homes and offices.

Guest (Oct 5, 2006 1:00:17 PM)
Can we create a pet and then adopt it in our home?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:00:17 PM)
Yes, you can create a pet at the beginning of the game. We are proud of many different things in this game, but I think Create a Pet is definitely one of the best thing in the game. It is amazing how many different combinations of dogs and cats you can create.

sparkedsim (Oct 5, 2006 1:01:46 PM)
With the Handheld versions, do you have to program them from scratch or do they get built from the original???

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:01:46 PM)
All of the handheld versions are unique.

dalmations4life1 (Oct 5, 2006 1:03:17 PM)
do the cats/dogs get to wear clothes if you wanted them to?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:03:17 PM)
Yes. At first, I was a little scared by the idea of pets wearing clothes, because in real life I look a little funny at people who put their german shepherd's in little cashmere sweaters, but oh man. When I saw in our game a cat walking around with a top hat, I really felt like we had hit a home run. You have to see it to believe it. We have shirts, hats, glasses, shoes, bandanas and all kinds of different collars and other accessories to help juice up your pet.

PugLove888 (Oct 5, 2006 1:04:10 PM)
So, does that mean that there will be breeds that exist in real life, as well as new breeds that you can create yourself?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:04:10 PM)
You can create any dog or cat that you can imagine in the console versions. The Create-a-Pet feature is so much fun to play with. You can also choose from popular dog and cat breeds. During the game, pets can breed to create unique puppies and kittens.

Amelia (Oct 5, 2006 1:04:37 PM)
Can the pets wear clothes in the ds version?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:04:37 PM)
Yes, pets can wear clothing, collars and hats. It's very cute.

lovette215 (Oct 5, 2006 1:04:55 PM)
how fat can we make our pets?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:04:55 PM)
very Happy

Guest (Oct 5, 2006 1:05:31 PM)
how many pets can you have?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:05:31 PM)
Every house must have one human Sim plus space for five other Sims, whether those Sims are humans or pets. SO, in total, you can have 5 pets per house, which is crazy fun and a bit challenging.

Guest (Oct 5, 2006 1:05:43 PM)
Is hillary duff in all of the console versions?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:05:44 PM)
Hilary Duff appears in the PS2, Gamecube and Nintendo DS games.

Trent97106 (Oct 5, 2006 1:06:47 PM)
Had you always planned on creating a Pet's game, or was it the begging from the players that made you decide to?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:06:47 PM)
Both. We get so many good ideas from the community. However, we like the idea of Pets just as much as the community. It's something that we've wanted to do for a long time.

Hanihuni9 (Oct 5, 2006 1:07:18 PM)
Can we change the face size of our pets in CAP the way we will be able to in the PC version?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:07:18 PM)
In the console versions, you can morph your pets face in a variety of ways. It's a very cool creativity tool.

Guest (Oct 5, 2006 1:07:49 PM)
What non-pet additions are in the console versions?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:07:50 PM)
We have added a new downtown area. The PC version has had a downtown for a number of years, but this is a new thing for console. Also, the size of the town increases as the player advances in the game. The buildings get more ooo lah lah (or however you spell that) and more people move into the town.

VASHORTYGIRL01 (Oct 5, 2006 1:07:53 PM)
Will the puppies and kittens grow up to be adult dogs or will they stay little?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:07:53 PM)
Puppies and kittens do grow up Happy

Heavenly7410 (Oct 5, 2006 1:08:31 PM)
Will be a new music in game?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:08:31 PM)
Yes, we have an entirely new list of music this year.

skittles51194 (Oct 5, 2006 1:10:04 PM)
Will there be puggles?? Happy

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:10:04 PM)
yes Happy

lovette215 (Oct 5, 2006 1:10:24 PM)
are you all secretly llamas?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:10:24 PM)
yes

Trent97106 (Oct 5, 2006 1:11:31 PM)
What are some of the interactions we can have with our sim pets?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:11:31 PM)
The Sim can train pets in several tricks, socialize with them, play with them, feed them, bathe them and generally take care of their well-being.

ZC (Oct 5, 2006 1:11:38 PM)
Can Pets be aliens, zombies or vampires?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:11:38 PM)
There are alien pets in the PSP version

Guest (Oct 5, 2006 1:12:07 PM)
can you buy/sell animals?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:12:07 PM)
Yes. You can buy and sell your pets.

Fangree_Craig (Oct 5, 2006 1:13:01 PM)
Will there be a Free play open ended mode like in previous console Sims games?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:13:01 PM)
The console game is entirely free play. You can build up your families and the town however you like.

Guest (Oct 5, 2006 1:13:44 PM)
When pets pass on do they have their own little grave markers?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:13:44 PM)
Pets will not die in our game. If you neglect your pet, they will run away after passing out a couple times.

mike (Oct 5, 2006 1:14:00 PM)
Do the Pets need to be potty trained?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:14:00 PM)
Cats know how to use the litter box, but you have to train dogs to go outside. You can even train cats to use the toilet.

squirrel7284 (Oct 5, 2006 1:15:19 PM)
are there any cool minigames in pets?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:15:19 PM)
There are a ton of cool minigames in the NDS and GBA versions. My favorite GBA minigame is the flea-catching game. My favorite NDS minigame is the cooking minigame. You get to pick your food ingredients and then you have to keep the temperature just-right for the right amount of time. It's funny when you don't get it right.

GTNS (Oct 5, 2006 1:16:02 PM)
Isn't it hard to manage all our Sims' and pets' needs?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:16:02 PM)
There will be some challenge in this, just as there is some challenge in managing a large family, but pets will also take care of themselves to a large degree if you set up the right conditions. So, if you have a couple dogs and you place a dog house, some food and some toys, they will be able to do fairly well, especially if they have another pet to play with.

PugLove888 (Oct 5, 2006 1:16:39 PM)
Will the there be wants and fears in the console version for the animals?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:16:39 PM)
Yes, pets have wants in the console version. Sims are rewarded for satisfying their pet wants with pet points that can be used to purchase things in the town square.

Guest (Oct 5, 2006 1:17:16 PM)
Can you make robo pets?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:17:16 PM)
You can make robotic pets in the PSP version

Fangree_Craig (Oct 5, 2006 1:18:34 PM)
Is there any treats you can give your dog if they do something good?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:18:34 PM)
you can give your pets treats in the console version to encourage them during training.

Trent97106 (Oct 5, 2006 1:19:10 PM)
What is the most interesting or funny thing a pet can do?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:19:11 PM)
The list is long. One feature I really like is the idea of pet personalities, especially the pigpen and snooty pets. A pigpen pet not only likes big messes, he goes out of his way to find them and roll in them and / or eat them. And a finicky pet will raise a pretty big fuss if you don't keep his dish absolutely clean. So I love setting up situations where a messy cat and a finicky cat lives in the same house. It creates a pretty big ruckus.

tbatch (Oct 5, 2006 1:20:28 PM)
Is there a true storyline in the sims pets or is it just looking after pets?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:20:28 PM)
There is a real story line in the GBA version. In the console and PSP versions, you help to build up the town that you live in so you can really tell your own story.

squirrel7284 (Oct 5, 2006 1:20:48 PM)
any favorite moments while designing the game?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:20:48 PM)
I really enjoyed researching all the personalities for the different breeds in the game. I mistakenly thought that cats and dogs had pretty simple personalities, but they do differ pretty widely in the personality department and we tried to catch these quirks when creating the established breeds.

drewkruel (Oct 5, 2006 1:21:57 PM)
how does this game look on the consoles?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:21:57 PM)
We're really happy with the graphics, especially the home and town square lots. The backgrounds are absolutely gorgeous.

stjimmy797 (Oct 5, 2006 1:22:01 PM)
Will pets have relationships with each other?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:22:01 PM)
Yes, and these relationships will be very important. Pets can be both friends and enemies and they each will have different ideas about who "owns" a particular object. If Fido and Buster both think that the rope toy is theirs, a fight may erupt, even if they are friends.

MaxoidMel (Oct 5, 2006 1:22:37 PM)
Ok guys, we have a few more minutes left! We're going to take the last batch of questions and wrap the chat up in about 10 minutes.

Guest (Oct 5, 2006 1:23:49 PM)
If we say, train our pets, will we be able to unlock more new commands?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:23:50 PM)
Yes. We tried to use as much common sense as possible when tiering the commands. For example, before a pet can dance, he needs to learn how to stand in place. Before a pet can guard, he needs to learn how to stay.

drkcld1991 (Oct 5, 2006 1:24:17 PM)
Maxis First you guys are the best and i love u guys. Is there a exact release date for the ds version?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:24:17 PM)
October 31st

Guest (Oct 5, 2006 1:25:02 PM)
Will pets belong to a specific member of the family or will all pets just be a "family pet"?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:25:02 PM)
Pets belong to the family, but each pet will have one master.

ashleymm (Oct 5, 2006 1:25:50 PM)
are there any new foods in the sims 2 pets

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:25:50 PM)
Yes. We have increased the number of ingredients available in our create a food system. We now have new things like tofu and llama meat. A crowd pleaser.

hoganimi (Oct 5, 2006 1:26:19 PM)
whats your favorite trick that a pet can do?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:26:19 PM)
I think it's really funny when Pets dance Happy

Megsimadic (Oct 5, 2006 1:27:24 PM)
Whats the most challenging thing to do in each of the console games?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:27:24 PM)
The most challenging goal in the GBA game is to unlock the Statue in the town center. Good luck !

DemonOfJustice (Oct 5, 2006 1:27:52 PM)
Can you make your own food for pets?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:27:52 PM)
Yes you can. If you have any leftovers from your human meal, you can use a mixer to turn the leftovers into pet food of different qualities. So, if you grind up a lobster, you get great pet food. If you grind up an orange with some butter, the result may not be quite as good.

theboid28 (Oct 5, 2006 1:28:41 PM)
Can we take our pets to the park?

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:28:41 PM)
Yes you may. The park will provide a great opportunity for you and your pet to meet other Sims and other pets.

simfantastic2 (Oct 5, 2006 1:28:59 PM)
Can you be your pet in PSP or you just control one sim?

MaxoidBen (Oct 5, 2006 1:28:59 PM)
In the PSP version, you control all of the Sims in each family. You never actually control the pets, but you can teach commands to your pets. If the pets are smart, they will learn fast but doofus pets need more time and patience.

kristikay (Oct 5, 2006 1:29:14 PM)
thanks for all your hard work!

MaxoidJoe (Oct 5, 2006 1:29:14 PM)

You can get cool clothes for your pets like shirts, hats, collars, scarves and glasses.

<blockquote>The latest issue of the Pet Training Paper is here. <a href="http://thesims2.ea.com/about/ep4_trainer2.php">Check It Out!</a></blockquote> <!--break--> <hr /> <div style="background-color: #60AFCE; color: #000066; width: 680px; padding:10px;"> <h3 style="color: #FFFFFF;">The Sims 2 Pets Training Paper</h3> <p><img style="float: left;" src="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-about_2.jpg" alt="The Sims 2 Pets" /><strong>Issue II</strong><br /> Welcome back to The Sims 2 Pets Training Paper! In this issue we'll cover the ways that you can train, play with, and love your new Sim pets to help them fit right in with their new Sim family.</p> <div class="clear"></div> <div style="float: left; width: 320px; padding: 10px;"> <p><img src="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-title_training.gif" alt="The Sims 2 Pets" /></p> <p><strong>Learned or Reinforced Behaviors</strong><br /> Start with the basics. There is no point trying to teach Prince to play dead if he isn't even potty-trained. Teaching Sim pets acceptable behaviors is the first step in helping them get along with their Sim families. These behaviors include where to relieve their bladders, what foods to eat, and more.</p> <p><strong>Just Say No</strong><br /> When Sim pets are up to no good (digging in the yard or chewing on something that they shouldn't), your Sims have the option to scold their pet. No pet loves to be chastised, so a few firm words can go a long way toward teaching Sim pets the manners they need to get along in their Sim families. Make sure your Sims praise their pets for good behavior to balance out the necessary reprimands and their relationships will benefit in the long run.</p> <p><strong>Take It Outside!</strong><br /> Encourage your Sim pup to piddle outside. Your Sims might still have a puddle to clean up, but if the pet chooses the sidewalk as their preferred spot, it will be much better than inside on your Sims' living room carpet.</p> <p><strong>Bad Dog?</strong><br /> If your Sims reinforce certain pet behaviors (like digging in the yard or sleeping on the bed) by praising the pet for these actions, the pet will repeat these acts. If a pet has been encouraged to behave a certain way (or wasn't discouraged either!), they aren't misbehaving. There is no such thing as a Bad Dog, only one that wasn't trained properly.</p> <p><a href="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-pettrainer_dogdigging.jpg" rel="lightbox"><img src="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-dogdigging.jpg" alt="The Sims 2 Pets" /></a></p> <p><strong>Tricks for Treats</strong><br /> Your pets can also learn to perform tricks for the amusement of both Sims and pets alike. Spend enough time teaching kitty to dance and your Sim may have the next feline Baryshnikov. Pets can also be taught to play dead, shake, sit up, roll over, speak, and more.</p> <p><img src="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-title_play.gif" alt="The Sims 2 Pets" /></p> <p>Pets love to play! Make sure that your Sims provide them with plenty of toys to keep them entertained--or else they might resort to making their own games out of less acceptable items! Rubber chew bones, catnip mice, and other pets can all help keep your animal pals amused.</p> <p><strong>Take a Walk</strong><br /> A leisurely stroll around the neighborhood is a good way to spend time with both cats and dogs. Hit the pavement for some fresh air and exercise!</p> <p><strong>Fetch!</strong><br /> Not all dogs are as taken with this game, and you won't find a feline who is fond of fetching, but some dogs will chase a stick for hours on end. Enjoy quality pet time by engaging in this tried-and-true activity with a dog chum.</p> <p><strong>Razzle</strong><br /> Playing with pets is a good way for your Sim to increase it's relationship with it's furry friend.</p> <p><strong>Plays Nicely with Others</strong><br /> While some animals enjoy nothing more than a frolicsome romp, others approach life in a more dignified manner. Keep an eye out for pets whose playfulness is incompatible. If Mushroom is more inclined to play than Minty, he might make a nuisance of himself with his rambunctious invitations.</p> <p><a href="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-pettrainer_catfaceoff.jpg" rel="lightbox"><img src="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-catfaceoff.jpg" alt="The Sims 2 Pets" /></a></p> <p><img src="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-title_morebreeds.gif" alt="The Sims 2 Pets" /></p> <div style="clear:both;"><img src="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-cat_bullet.gif" alt="The Sims 2 Pets" /><strong>Chartreux</strong><div style="width: 180px; float: right;">This wide-eyed, wooly coated feline's rounded, smiling face gives it the appearance of perpetual peace and happiness.</div></div> <div style="clear:both;"><img src="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-cat_bullet.gif" alt="The Sims 2 Pets" /><strong>Norwegian Forest</strong><div style="width: 180px; float: right;">With its long, fluffy coat, this breed is well-suited for the coldest climates. If not for that, it would look more like a smaller version of the English bulldog.</div></div> <div style="clear:both;"><img src="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-dog_bullet.gif" alt="The Sims 2 Pets" /><strong>German Shepard</strong><div style="width: 180px; float: right;">A hugely popular breed, this large, agile, and courageous dog is well-suited for police work and also makes a good guide or guard dog.</div></div> <div style="clear:both;"><img src="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-dog_bullet.gif" alt="The Sims 2 Pets" /><strong>Great Dane</strong><div style="width: 180px; float: right;">This giant of a dog claims German, rather than Danish, roots and, in spite of its intimidating size, is usually very gentle.</div></div> <div style="clear:both;"><img src="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-dog_bullet.gif" alt="The Sims 2 Pets" /><strong>Jack Russell Terrier</strong><div style="width: 180px; float: right;">This small but spirited dog was originally bred by the Reverend John Russell for fox hunting in Devonshire, England.</div></div> <div style="clear:both;"><img src="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-dog_bullet.gif" alt="The Sims 2 Pets" /><strong>Schipperke</strong><div style="width: 180px; float: right;">Schipperke is Flemish for "little captain" and evokes this breed's reputation as the consummate boat dog.</div></div> <div style="clear:both;"><img src="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-dog_bullet.gif" alt="The Sims 2 Pets" /><strong>Shiba Inu</strong><div style="width: 180px; float: right;">The smallest of native Japanese dogs, this breed was officially recognized in December 1936, when the Cultural Properties Act designated it as a precious natural product of the Japanese nation.</div></div> <div style="clear:both;"><img src="internal:sites/simsnetwork.com/files/news/2006/20060921-trainer-dog_bullet.gif" alt="The Sims 2 Pets" /><strong>Weimaraner</strong><div style="width: 180px; float: right;">This relatively young breed, characterized by grace and speed, was originally bred for its hunting ability.</div></div> </div> <div class="clear"></div> </div>
